Camphill Communitites California is a life-sharing community for adults with developmental disabilities. We are located on 6 acres of land in Soquel, CA between the north shore of Monterey Bay and the Santa Cruz Mountains.
What is the mission of Camphill Communities California?
Camphill California is part of a worldwide movement of more than 100 communities for adults and children with developmental disabilities. Our mission is to provide a nurturing and dynamic residential community where adults with developmental disabilities live, learn and work together with professional caregivers and volunteers.
What is the Camphill Movement?
The first Camphill communities were founded in Great Britian and Europe by Austrian doctor Karl König (1902-1966). Armed with the belief that community was an essential component of healthy social and spiritual life, Camphill villages were created for adults with and without disabilities to share their work and home lives together and to mentor and support one another.
What is Anthroposophy?
All Camphill Communiites are inspired by the teachings of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) who understood human beings as a totality of body, soul and spirit. Steiner’s philosophy and its practical applications constitute a body of knowledge known as Anthroposophy.
What is Social Therapy?
Like all Camphill Communities for adults, Camphill California aims to give adults with developmental challenges the tools to cope with their disabilities and to find a balance between who they are and who they are potentially able to be. Social therapy is the therapeutic philosophy that relationships developed through community living inspire human renewal. Artistic partnerships, shared labor and collective responsibilities inspire adults with developmental disabilities to learn about themselves and the world around them.
