Each year, a new team of U.S. and international volunteers join Camphill Communities California for 6-12 month of service. Volunteers live & learn together with our residents with developmental disabilities, and assist in the home, workshop and cultural life.
Living and Volunteering With Us
- Volunteers live and participate in community life at Camphill California for a period of at least 6 months.
- They are responsible for a variety of support tasks – participation in our community workshops, organization of cultural activities, and supporting household activities including cooking and cleaning.
- A typical day consists of a community gathering in the morning, 3 common meals, morning workshops, afternoon cultural and social activities and responsibilities to the home throughout the day and in the evening.
Please Note:
- We review applications year-round.
- Year-long commitments begin at the middle to end of July.
- Applicants must be at least 19 years old, have English language fluency, a willingness to support and live with others and an interest in community life.
- Because we support a vulnerable community, the State of California requires all applicants to undergo a background check and/or obtain a police report.
Live-In Volunteers
Camphill California provides each volunteer with a private room and board, and covers the cost of health insurance if needed. Volunteers can request reimbursements for their personal expenses during the gap service year. U.S. volunteers with college debt can apply for a College Loan Support Program while serving as volunteers in Camphill California. Our view is that college debt obligations shouldn’t keep someone from enjoying the life-changing benefits of a volunteer gap year. Read our Volunteer Role Description here.

If you have previous experience living in a Camphill community and are interested in a long-term position, contact us below. We will consider long-term applications if you can make a commitment for 3+ years.
